First students awarded CLAiT 2006
A former teacher from Russia is among the first to achieve a CLAiT 2006 full award Certificate.
Mother of two Vera Goldring decided to take up a CLAiT course at Tunbridge Wells IT Centre in order to develop her computing skills and enhance her employment prospects.
"It's a very good programme and the exercises which we had to do were very clear. I very seldom had to ask questions," she says. Vera really enjoyed studying towards her Level 1 Certificate (New CLAiT), so much so that she is now working towards the Diploma.
Tunbridge Wells IT Centre, part of West Kent College, first introduced CLAiT when the full suite of qualifications was launched in 2001, and college staff introduced the 2006 version back in September 2005.
Talking about the refreshed suite, Centre Manager Alison Millis says: "I feel that OCR has done well in putting something together that's fair to the students and that we can work with." She is particularly enthusiastic about the Computer Based Assessment options at Level 1: "CBA has been a godsend - it gives us more time to devote to teaching," she says. Switching to the revised suite was fairly simple, Alison says. "Planning material became available and we have developed our own learning material too - we can put the emphasis where we need it."
CLAiT 2006 offers three levels of computer qualifications with single unit Certificates, full award Certificates and full award Diploma options. New CLAiT, CLAiT Plus and CLAiT Advanced can be tailored to individual needs, progressing skills and helping learners to meet the demands of the modern home and office. As an added benefit, students can achieve a CLAiT Plus Certificate or Diploma purely through Microsoft Office Specialist tests.
Many students who achieved CLAiT at Tunbridge Wells IT Centre have returned to the college with very positive feedback. "They come back and say they wouldn't have been able to get the job they have got without CLAiT," Alison says.
